S2S licence (rev. 4)

Use of data accessed via this service

The datasets available via this service are The Sub-seasonal To Seasonal (S2S) dataset, which consists of ensemble forecasts and reforecasts from participating global numerical weather prediction centres.

Data from following centres are included and made available for online access:

  • BoM: Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne, Australia
  • CMA: China Meteorological Administration, Beijing, China
  • CNR-ISAC: Istituto di Scienze dell'Atmosfera e del Clima, Bologna, Italy
  • CNRM: Le Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques, Toulouse, France
  • CPTEC: Centro de Previsao Tempo e Estudos Climaticos, Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil
  • ECCC: Environment and Climate Change Canada, Toronto, Canada
  • ECMWF: European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Reading, Europe
  • HMCR: Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia, Moscow, Russia
  • IAP-CAS: Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China
  • JMA: Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo, Japan
  • KMA: Korea Meteorological Administration, Seoul, Korea
  • NCEP: National Centres for Environmental Prediction, Washington, DC, USA
  • UKMO: United Kingdom's Met Office, Exeter, United Kingdom

New data are added to the archive from contributors on an ongoing basis.

Different S2S data available via the ECMWF Data Store (ECDS) are provided under two types of a licence depending on the model and the respective data provider, namely they are provided either under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) or under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0).

Depending on the respective data, registration will provide you with access to the S2S realtime type of forecast with a delay of 48 hours or 1 week after the initial time of the forecasts, as outlined below:

  • 48 hours for CMA, CNR-ISAC, CPTEC, ECCC, ECMWF, HMCR, IAP-CAS, JMA, KMA, NCEP data
  • 1 week for BoM, CNRM, UKMO data

The reforecasts can be accessed without any restrictions.

Access, retrieval and/or use of S2S data is regulated by the conditions below. By accepting this licence, the person accessing, retrieving and/or using of the S2S data agrees to be bound to the below conditions. If this person is agreeing to the below conditions on behalf of an organisation, company or other legal entity, such person represents that they have the legal authority to bind that organisation, company or legal entity to the below conditions. To the same effect, the use of one account to access, retrieve or use S2S data by a number of users constitutes an agreement with the below conditions by each one of these different users and the below-listed obligations are applicable to each one of these different users.

Terms of Use of ECMWF data from S2S dataset

Access to the ECMWF data from the S2S dataset is governed by the following Terms of Use in addition to the Creative Commons CC-4.0-BY licence:

  • ECMWF retains all Intellectual Property Rights and copyright over its data.
  • ECMWF must be acknowledged (attributed) as the source. Attribution must be displayed prominently and include ‘this document/data/output/Results is/are based on data and products of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)’. Users must remove attribution if requested by ECMWF.
  • ECMWF does not accept any liability whatsoever for any error or omission in the data, their availability, or for any loss or damage arising from their use.
  • ECMWF makes no warranty as to the accuracy or completeness of its data products or the uninterrupted provision of such data products. All data products are provided on an "as is" basis. Any warranty implied by statute or otherwise is hereby excluded to the fullest extent permissible by law.
  • ECMWF shall not be liable should ECMWF discontinue the provision of its data products at any time.
  • The parties shall attempt to settle any dispute in an amicable manner. If the dispute cannot be so settled, it shall be finally resolved under the Rules of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce by one or three arbitrators sitting in London, England. The proceedings shall be in English. In accordance with Sections 45 and 69 of the Arbitration Act 1996, the right of appeal to the English courts on a question of law is excluded.
  • Nothing in these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver of any of the privileges and immunities conferred upon ECMWF by its Member States through its Convention and Protocol on Privileges and Immunities.
